While the show is about a sleep away camp, we only keep the youth performers from 9-5 M-F for three weeks as we produce the musical! by Adam Roberts, Artistic Director, ACT Original Musical Project for Summer 2009
It's always exciting to take part in creating a new piece of art. Â For painters this often means finding a subject, readying the palette and canvas, and hours spent developing individual brushstrokes into a cohesive whole. Â A composer pulls sheets of staff paper from the drawer and--pencil in hand--inscribes detailed representations of sound in a musical code of dots, dashes and squiggles that will eventually take the form of a dazzling symphony. Â A sculptor dons work clothes and gets down and dirty with the clay at hand, shaping a nondescript clump into something incredible to behold. Â The process of creating a musical from scratch is quite different from these scenarios, however, in its focus on collaboration among artists of various genres. Â There are visual artists who design costumes, lighting and sets; composers and arrangers who provide the music for the production, and musicians who execute those arrangements; choreographers who design movement that extends and clarifies character; book writers who pen the dialogue that characters will speak; lyricists who fashion the words that characters will sing... the list goes on and on (and on).
As the director of ACT's 2009 original musical Welcome to Camp Katchakootie, it's my job to streamline these individual pieces of the puzzle together into a production that celebrates the tradition of summer camp.  This is an especially exciting original musical for ACT, as we've assembled a talented team of composer-lyricists to create the production's score.  ACT's gifted resident book writer-lyricist Susan Busa is currently hard at work crafting the story and script, and work on the show's songs is scheduled to begin shortly.  This means that now it's time for the most crucial step in any production--the assembling of a cast!  There's a spot (up to thirty participants) for anyone and everyone who wants to join in the fun; the show will be cast from those who enroll in the Original Musical Project for Summer 2009, so don't miss out on the invaluable experience of taking part as we create this new piece of musical theatre.  We look forward to seeing you at camp!  Â
